I know you can have 1 carry on and a personal on a plane but does a mini suit case and backpack count?

i am flying to AZ and my checked bag is planning on being my guitar. but i also plan on taking clothes so thought i would carry them on in a little suitcase and i heard you can have a personal as well can that be a backpack or does it have to be small?

If by backpack you mean “book bag” or “day pack” then yes, that is exactly what I take when I travel. If by backpack you mean “big enough to carry everything I need for three weeks in the high Rockies”, then no. That type of pack is too big.
