I want to learn music appreciation?

I love listening to all kinds of music, e.g. classical, jazz, hip-hop, rock. Nevertheless, I’ve never attended any music appreciation class, or read up on it. I truly admire people who can speak analytically about music or songs.
I wish to understand the technical side/theory about music, particularly the classical genre. Where is a good place to start? Any good online links? Btw I’m already past college age.

You’ve come to the right place for a start. You will find a good deal of information on this forum. There are four or five other things that I can suggest:

a) Get some good books. I always recommend Ted Libbey’s “The NPR guide to building a Classical CD Collection” and “The Essential Canon of Classical Music” by David Dubal.

b) Start acquiring some good recordings. If you are not sure what you like or where to start, the Essential Series on Decca is good [Essential Beethoven, Essential Mozart, Essential Bach, etc.]

c) There is a wealth of stuff on the net such as http://www.good-music-guide.com/

d) There are several good websites regarding music theory – www.musictheory.net for example.

e) If you are lucky there may be music appreciation / theory classes at a local community college, so you can study in the evenings perhaps. Frankly, the college age thing doesn’t really matter. You are not likely to be doing this as a professional occupation – more for self enrichment.
